Baker's asthma.

چکیده

Baker’s asthma is one of the most common forms of occupational asthma. The increasing knowledge in exposure–response relations accumulated in recent years is important in the understanding of baker’s asthma. This development has made scientifically based prevention feasible today and baker’s asthma should not be regarded as an inevitable occurrence any more. In 1700 Bernardo Ramazzini described respiratory symptoms among bakers caused by exposure to flour dust. However, there are anecdotal references from antiquity describing how Roman slaves working in bakeries protected themselves by using cloth as a primitive respirator to cover their faces because their breathing suffered from inhaling flour.

Comparison of Specific IgE Antibodies to Wheat Component Allergens in Two Phenotypes of Wheat Allergy

Specific IgE to gliadin was proposed as a marker for wheat dependent exercise induced anaphylaxis, while Tri a 14 was found to induce IgE response in baker's asthma. We evaluated whether these components could be used for discriminating phenotypes of wheat allergy. Twenty-nine patients who were wheat-induced anaphylaxis and/or urticaria (n=21, group I) and baker's asthma (n=8, group II) were en...

Baker's asthma in a child.

BACKGROUND baker's asthma is a well-known occupational lung disease which usually develops in adults. We report the case of a two years old boy who suffered from asthma, urticaria and atopic dermatitis for twelve months, whose symptoms were associated to visits to his grandfather's bakery. METHODS AND RESULTS skin prick tests (SPT) were made to dust mites, moulds, flours, alfa-amylase and egg...

Why can patients with baker's asthma tolerate wheat flour ingestion? Is wheat pollen allergy relevant?

Diagnosis in patients sensitised to multiple pollens is difficult due to the relationship between pollen and food allergens. Misdiagnosis is often a cause for unsuccessful specific immunotherapy. Wheat is a potent allergen source and is one of the causes of baker's asthma, food and pollen allergy. Recently, we have performed a study on pollen sensitisation in our area, where cereal crops are ve...

Wheat allergens associated with Baker's asthma.

Baker's asthma is a frequent occupational allergic disease caused mainly by inhalation of cereal flour, particularly wheat flour. This review deals with the current diagnosis and immunomodulatory treatments, as well as the role of wheat allergens as molecular tools to enhance management and knowledge of this disease. The review also discusses the current status of several salt-soluble proteins ...

Molecular and immunological characterization of a wheat serine proteinase inhibitor as a novel allergen in baker's asthma.

IgE-mediated sensitization to wheat flour belongs to the most frequent causes of occupational asthma. A cDNA library from wheat seeds was constructed and screened with serum IgE from baker's asthma patients. One IgE-reactive phage clone contained a full-length cDNA coding for an allergen with a molecular mass of 9.9 kDa and an isoelectric point of 6. According to sequence analysis it represents...

Determinants of specific sensitization in flour allergens in workers in bakeries with use of skin prick tests.

Baker's asthma, like other forms of occupational asthma is probably the most serious manifestation of occupational allergy among bakery workers. It is caused by immunologic sensitization and subsequent allergic reactions in the airways to occupational specific airborne allergens. Skin Prick Tests (SPTs) play an important role in the diagnosis of baker's asthma and epidemiological field studies ...
